Honest rational conversations are mostly a thing of the past.  Don't even think of debating beliefs of issues on social media, you are asking for trouble there, you might as well pack up and move and leave no forwarding address, whoever you may disagree with will badger and shame you to the extent of threatening your life, family, and property.

You won't be surprised that I really don't think it's a good idea to get your news from Fox News :). Their whole business model is to find ways to make you angry. They differ from other networks, including those with a liberal slant in that they knowingly lie. And in the last 3 years they have become pretty much the American equivalent of North Korean state TV. It's pretty easy to see where CNN is coming from because of their angle, the things they choose to focus on and the endless procession of talking heads tut-tutting about Trump's latest antics. But they don't actually lie. If they get something factually wrong, they admit it. Because of the 24 hour news cycle, both these networks fill airtime with editorial content slanted to their audience. It makes business sense but it deepens the divide in society. Personally I think T's idea of watching two biased networks and assuming the truth is somewhere in the middle is just silly. It's even more difficult on the internet. If I click on something from Fox News, my Facebook feed will inundate me with right wing content for the next week. Find one or more source that tells it to you straight or at least views it as their job to try to be objective - Reuters, NPR, BBC. And by the way, it is not biased to report that the President is lying, when he is. That is factual reporting.

Reuters has a really good fact check service. Interestingly, the last time I looked, among all the right wing conspiracy theories that we've become used to I found quite a few loony left wing conspiracy theories. https://www.reuters.com/news/archive/reuterscomservice?view=page&page=2&pageSize=10

As for genuine protestors working in concert with white supremacists, that's not what I meant. If white supremacists are involved (and I don't know yet if they are beyond their posing as left wing groups online and inciting violence), they will not be wearing KKK hoods. They will be posing as protestors, mingling with the crowds and starting trouble. There have been plenty of instances of protestors trying to stop troublemakers. It's not easy to stop someone from breaking windows or throwing projectiles.

One thing I have found shocking is some of the actions of the police during these protests. I always have a lot of sympathy for the police in this kind of situation. I imagine myself in their place and the kind of pressure that they are under. However, there have been so many instances of them using unnecessary force in completely unthreatening conditions, apparently just because they feel like it. I didn't believe the reports until I saw the evidence. Just down the road in Charlotte, police trapped a peaceful crowd between two lines of officers sealing off the street and then fired tear gas and pepper balls. This being 2020, it was filmed by people who were there. My daughter in Raleigh has friends who have had similar experiences. I don't remember seeing that before, but on reflection, I shouldn't be surprised when they have right wing media sources and the President himself encouraging them to believe these folks are all basically scum. My daughter's friends are not scum.

I don't think it's relevant that Floyd had tested positive for the virus or that he appeared to have had no symptoms. The important thing was that he was obviously in distress and couldn't breathe and the officer kept kneeling on his neck for over eight minutes. The virus didn't kill him.

Guys, thanks for keeping the tone of this discussion so civilized. We can disagree and be friends.

Hello Gav, I respect your opinions, and though we may not always agree, we will remain friends, (unless you steal my gummy bears).  Do you believe it is possible that nearly all cable news networks, including FOX, operate under the same business model?  I have found my reactions to the cable news networks tend to T me off, not so much on FOX.  CNN used to be my go to, but something changed in 2007 when I began to feel a definite swing in their programing towards the ultra left, just not my cup of tea.  I really don't care for NPR, they are government funded, as is PBS, I don't trust them.  Reuters and BBC are likely to report more accurately than most others.

The last time I saw a KKK member in full dress was in Pigeon Forge about 12 years ago.  This overly obese, pasty white, middle aged guy was in full white gown and pointy hat waving a rebel flag at passing traffic in 90 degree heat pouring sweat like a prostitute sitting in the front pew at a Baptist church.

What I have found shocking concerning Law Enforcement, is their lack of engagement, whether it be through upper command, or for other reasons, I just don't know.

I brought the COVID-19 into the conversation only because I can see where a good defense attorney might well convince a sympathetic  juror or two that poor George died of COVID-19 and not police brutality, resulting in a hung jury/mis trial, or even a not guilty.

Thanks for this Gav, very interesting! Tell me... do you really believe it's the conservatives lying on social media?

I deleted my Facebook and Twitter accounts over a year ago now and don't regret it a bit! Mostly because I couldn't find any conservative views there, not even among the Christians... Social media is obviously leftist domain, and yes, they violently defend it. What's happening in the streets of predominantly Democrat cities is really no surprise to me.

The last time I saw the KKK in the news, Atlanta denied them permission to adopt a mile of interstate 20... They won't even allow the KKK to pick up trash on the highway! How useless is that?!? lol

Mmmmm... Gummy Bears...... 😉

Yes, I think it's mostly from the right, starting with you-know-who LOL. I try not to get my news via social media anyway. I find it useful for staying in touch with far away friends and family, not so much the political stuff. I don't see how it could be described as a leftist domain, or a rightist domain either. It exists as the people who are on it. The problem is that people naturally tend to gravitate to people who share their views. If the only "news" they get is what their friends share or point them to, then they are never going to get a balanced view.

I have only encountered the KKK once, years ago. They held a rather sad demonstration in our town center when I happened to be there. My daughter, who must have been about 5 got quite excited and said, "Look, Daddy - Coneheads!"

OK, I hate to stray so far from the original conversation, but "T" brings up a good point.  Monday night the rioting looters tore New York City apart.  Tuesday, Andrew Cuomo, the Governor of New York State, chastised the Mayor of New York City, Bill De Blasio  and the heads at Police Plaza for failing to do their jobs, ie; protect the citizens of New York City by controlling the streets.  Also on Tuesday a front line Police commander stated on a news feed that New York City needed the National Guard as the police were overwhelmed, and the police had been told to stand down by the Mayor and Upper Police Managers.  Tuesday night the streets were as quiet as a church mouse and as bare as a newborns bottom.  The obvious question in my conspiracy theory wracked brain was, is the Mayor and Police Dept. heads working in concert with the rioters?  This also has seemed to be going on in many of the 140 some odd cities in all of our 50 states.  is this something much bigger than even we could have imagined?  Is there an agenda among left wing politicians to over through our duly elected Government?  Are we watching a coup take place?  Has the last four years been a coup in the making by left wing Democrats?   Probably not, but it could happen.

It's not a coup... it's the same childish rebellion from 3 1/2 years ago with a new excuse...

No, it's not a coup. It's not a childish rebellion either. These kids are mad. Nothing ever seems to change. Some of those smashing windows, etc. are no doubt doing it out of anger, reasoning that it's the only way anyone is actually going to pay attention. I hate to even think it, but maybe they have a point, even though I disagree with it. If they parade peacefully for a couple of days, those in power will just pat them on the head and nothing changes. Smash a window - it can be repaired. Shoot someone or kneel on his neck until he's dead - you can't fix him. If it takes a few broken windows to achieve change that saves lives, then it's worth it. That's how the reasoning goes. I don't agree - those stores and other property belong to real people, they're not just props for a demonstration, and it's only a very small minority that think this way, and even fewer who act on it, but it is an argument that is being made.
