Depression?!?
"First time I saw you there, you took me unawares
Thought I was one that you had missed
Never thought to see your face, feel the freeze of your embrace
You surprised me with your kiss"""
Sorry Gavin, that's not allegory... THAT'S PSYCHOTIC! I love it!
Perhaps what this needs is a line about "being ashamed to speak its name"? ?

@japov Actually, Tony, I'm one of the lucky ones. I've never suffered from clinical depression, the kind that messes with the chemicals in your brain or whatever. Whenever I have felt depressed, there has been a good reason for it, but sometimes those good reasons can bring you to what might be a closer understanding of where depression can take you - those "dark and dusty stairs" in the song. Somehow with me I reach a low point at which something in me says, "To hell with this - I can't go on feeling this way," and I climb back up the stairs. Sometimes, though, it just seems to get harder to do that, so I guess that's what the song is about.

Yeah', I think we can all relate to that. Ups and downs are definitely a fact of life.
But with regard to the song... I'm just saying, perhaps it shouldn't be so hard to get. The difference between feeling depressed and hearing voices leading you down to the basement is, one certainly DOES require medication! lol 🙂

He's not actually hearing voices, Tony. It's a metaphor for what he's feeling. That's not so say I don't require medication - I'm going out for a pint of medication now.
