Hey guys,

a few days ago my son sent me a playback and asked for a song lyric. He composed, recorded and produced the music as a soundtrack for the „Intel Extreme Masters 2020 Contest“ in Katowice. It’s for one of the biggest Esports events in the world. They are asking for Electronic, Orchestral, Trap, Rap, Rock or hybrid genres.

They are looking for lyrics that follow these lines:

Struggle to the top, overcoming obstacles, going out victorious, rise up from the dust, claim the throne, awaken, warrior, etc. Esports is all about the 'started from the bottom now we here' vibes.

Well, I’m not a gamer and I’m not familiar with Esports nor these genres so I handed everything over to a young vocalist I often work with: Tara-Lynn Sharrock from Australia. She wrote some very modern lyrics for the song and recorded some stunning vocals to go with the soundtrack.

I want to share this song production with you because it sounds so up-to-date and different. They both didn’t follow any songwriting rules when they wrote this. In my opinion, a new generation of songwriters is showing up. Many people are claiming today’s songs all sound the same. Well, not this one. It’s called “BURN”. You have to listen to this on your stereo with the volume turned up. It will blow the windows out! Enjoy…

All the best

Robert

BURN

V1
When your world feels dark
You're lookin' over both your shoulders
And it feels like the days are colder
But they're not

Don't lose yourself
To the pressure of the fire
Repeat it now, 'you can go higher'
Hit the sky

Mmm

PRE-CHORUS
‘Cause you've been
Beat down, torn apart
Ripped to shreds all over the world
But you keep tryin'
You keep tryin'

Mm

Throw down
Hit the mark
Do what it takes to trigger that spark
So you'll keep fighting
You keep fighting

The enemy shows his face
Mirroring your deepest fears
Confront yourself, the time is now
You're the master of your fate!

DROP
We Will burn!

CHORUS
The time has come
For you to decide
Whether you'll rise or fall from grace
(Be the master of your fate)

We will burn
Their flags of war
And when the enemy shows his face

He will burn

Lyrics & vocals: Tara-Lynn Sharrock

Heeding your advice about blowing my windows out, I listened on a Mac 🙂

Great production. This kind of music might not be my cup of tea, but I can appreciate the skill that went into it and it feels just right for the purpose. Well done to all involved and good luck with placing it with the Esports event.

I may or may not be an enigma

It’s too SHORT! It needs guitars and I’d like to hear Tara scream! ?

Hi Tony,
thanks for the feedback. Guitars and screaming might sound good but I'm not sure that is what they were looking for. Here is a reference track that they posted on their website :

Now it's 3:39 minutes.

All the best
Robert

You mention a reference track? I don't see a link.

I'd like to 'see' the use to which the composition would be synchronized.

Tara's work and your son's may be appropriate or not, depending on that mutuality of purpose.

As always I wish you the greatest success.

Hi Gary,
here's their page with the song requirements: https://www.labelradar.com/opportunities/IEM2020/portal

Do you think the song was appropriate?

They didn't like the song or some other song was better.

All the best
Robert

BURN

V1
When your world feels dark (Your world feels dark)
You're lookin' over both your shoulders (You're lookin' over your shoulder.)
And it feels like the days are colder (It feels like the days are colder)
But they're not (But they're not. It's hot! It's hot!)

Don't lose yourself (I don't hear the word 'Don't'.)
To the pressure of the fire
Repeat it now, 'you can go higher' (Say it now! You can go higher!)
Hit the sky

Mmm

PRE-CHORUS
‘Cause you've been (You've been)
(I think this is your Chorus)
Beat down,
torn apart
Ripped to shreds all over the world
But you keep tryin'
You keep tryin'

Mm

Throw down
Hit the mark
Do what it takes to trigger that spark
So you'll keep fighting
You keep fighting

The enemy shows his face
Mirroring your deepest fears
Confront yourself! The time is now!
You're the master of your fate!

DROP
We Will burn! (Background singers. Burn! Burn! Burn!) (Without reinforcement the 'Burn' concept doesn't stand out, isn't set for repetition.)

CHORUS
The time has come (Time has come!)
For you to decide (You must decide!)
Whether you'll rise or fall from grace
(Be the master of your fate) (I don't hear this Line at all. I hear a vocalization but not the words.)
(Dynamics, percussion.)

We will burn! (Background singers: Burn! Burn! Burn!)
Their flags of war (I don't hear this Line.)
And when the enemy shows his face (Delete 'And'. When the enemy shows his face,)

He will burn (Burn! Burn! Burn!) (I don't hear the 'He' strongly enough to get it. Give each word a standalone space: He! - Will! - Burn!)
(Repeat He! - Will! - Burn!, and background singers, 'Burn! Burn! Burn!', one more time? Two more? A long, sustained 'Burrrrrnnnn'! might be dynamic too.)

Music & instruments: Leon Baitinger
Lyrics & vocals: Tara-Lynn Sharrock

(Just because they didn't use it doesn't mean it doesn't still have potential for gaming use. All the games are about conflict and you, the player, assuming the character of the hero. Tara's Lyric is strong on that concept, the ideology of surviving and fighting back. Enunciation is key to listeners 'getting' the concepts. Repetition is key to driving home the 'Burn' concept, earworming it so the listener can't 'not' hear it, not get it. "He Will Burn" might be a stronger title.)
