Obsessed With Guitar Tones

I don't know what it is but I always seem to be searching for a better guitar tone. Just when I think I've found the perfect tone I soon start thinking it could be better and the tinkering continues. I'm primarily an electric guitar guy but I will play acoustic pieces on our songs from time to time. The acoustic guitar I have always used was an inexpensive Fender Stratacoustic. Yes I know that is not the ideal guitar for recording, but I really liked playing it because it was so comfortable to play. It just didn't sound very good.

So today I got fed up with it and traded it for a different Fender acoustic. So far I'm pleased with it. It sounds much better that the Stratacoustic. I'm still searching for the right tone for recording with it though.

In this clip I'm running it through a bass guitar pedal then adding in reverb and a bit of EQ in my DAW. It's OK, but as I always think...it could be better. Maybe the perfect tone lies Over The Hills And Far Away......

Very nice tone. Some interesting guitar faces you're making there, John. Guitar playing is always in the faces that you make.

Lol!

I have three monitors setup in a triangle with one larger one up high. I think some of that is my "interesting" guitar face and some of it is me looking at the upper monitor. Either way its weird. I need to work on that. 🙂

I think it has a good tone.  Could be just a touch thicker.

Nice looking guitar there, John. I'm with these guys. The tone is very nice, but also with D, could be a smidgen thicker, though that might be something you do in post.

BTW, that's my favourite Led Zep song. Back at university I started learning the guitar. I was three months out of the gate when a dude in the halls of residence (where I lived at the time) found out I "played the guitar" lol and not really but he clearly didn't know that...overheard me playing exercises in my room and thought I was the next Jimmy Page. Anyway, he asked me if I would learn to play Over the Hills and Far Away for him. I (cocky kid that I was) said, "SURE, why not." lol. WAY above my pay grade at the time. Took me months...and by the time I'd learned it passably, the dude had dropped out to become a taxi driver

Totally in to that. Bring on the Zeppelin.

Jenny Page would be better than Moaning Kiwi I assure you. Would you please head over to the "What's going on" page to support my plea for changing the title...especially given that very soon, you too will be inheriting the title. (my understanding is that anyone achieving three stars gets dubbed Moaning Kiwi)

Pick a Zeppelin song.

Regarding your member level...should it be 'junior member', member in training', 'member probation level 3', defcon 3, 'assistant TO the regional manager'? Hmm I can't decide on what would be best.

I like all of those, John. I'll suggest them to the administrator. I know he's very upset about not being able to keep Jenny happy.

I may or may not be an enigma

I think acoustic guitars always sound better through a pair of special acoustic guitar microphones
The sound of acoustic guitars through pickups is always very hard and quite free of magic
It is always more comfortable to record through pickups
But the difference with good microphones exists and a lot.

I absolutely agree, Marcus. A mic injects life into the recording.
