Why don't we dispense with the notion of conformity. We are not going to belong to the inner circle of Nashville even if we want to which i don't. Let's focus on creativity and let our imaginations go free to explore new avenues of self expression. It is what made the 60 's music so special. That spirit is not dead it's simply been misplaced. Lets go in search of it together!

Paradoxically, it maybe also offers more chance of success. That depends on how you define success, of course.

That and i want songs that evoke some kind of emotional response. Laughter, anger, indignation, sorrow. There are still plenty of things to celebrate and protest. Things i see i disagree with. I want to write about it all.

People can and should be as non-conformist as they want when it comes to any creative endeavor. The first person you should please should be yourself.
Self therapy, personal achievement, artistic expression and simply enjoyment, are the main reasons we all write.
It's only when you are trying to go for a more "commercial" (the ears of others) that you have to find a way to make your non-conformity work within the genre you choose to go for.
Marc-Alan Barnette
Exactly. I miss the creativity and passion of the 60' s. Music needs a new renaissance.
carroll kiphen
Well it actually has it. It's called THE INTERNET. There are literally BILLIONS of songs and TENS OF MILLIONS of writers, artists, creators, out there doing just that. Streaming is the main source of people getting their music now. Anyone can do anything they want to. As far as the "MAINSTREAM" sources go, that is not going to happen, because that is not what mainstream radio, television, movies, etc. do. They go for the MAINSTREAM audience, which is not interested in the experimental or avandgard. That is no longer how people disseminate their music. They are far more dissipated, and don't follow one form of music.
So you can be as experimental as you want. But that is called NICHE MARKETING. You have to find your niche. But it is out there, believe me. Just find a genre you like and go for it.
It's the best of times and the worst of times.
If you are creative, off the wall, left or right of center, walk your own pathway, this is the best of times because you can do anything you want to with no boundaries whatsoever.
If you are trying to be a commercial artist/writer on mainstream radio, and mainstream sources, finding publishers labels, artists for your music,(GETTING PAID FOR IT) ,like the "old days", it is the WORST OF TIMES, because it is extraordinarily expensive and even with that, there is no guarantee of anything ever.
Decide what you want to do, what fuels your passions, find out where your audience is, and go for it. You gotta make your own kind of music.
And remember, "YOU DON'T CHOOSE MUSIC, MUSIC CHOOSES YOU.

Yep the best of times the worst of times.could never collaborate worldwide like we do before. Ain't trying to make money. If it accidentally happened i wouldn't cry about it but that's not why i write.
carroll kiphen
Carrol, Don't exactly know what you mean by "Never collaborate like we do before", but the commercial music world has always been collaboration. It's why you mainly had "COMPOSERS AND LYRICISTS." Now just more people have to be involved in the collaboration. Artists, assistants, producers, etc. all get into the act. Nature of the beast. Collaboration is actually more the norm than the solo written songs. That came in with Dylan and the 60's, but even with Dylan, one of his most famous songs in the past 30 years is "Wagon Wheel", which was written by himself and a guy from the OLD CROW MEDICINE SHOW." So the music world is and always has been a collaborative effort more times than not.
I've never met a hit writer (and I've worked with a lot of them) who got into this for "fame and fortune." The money is always a by product and usually not in the top reasons people write, record or perform music. It is more accidental than anything that anyone is successful. So do what you do and try to find as large an audience as you can. If money comes, fine, but go for your passions. Always do that, and you'll never fail.

No.... I want to kill mainstream! I want to stomp mainstream till there’s nothing left but teeth hair and eyeballs! I want everyone responsible for this "so called" mainstream agenda to be held to account then doused with diesel fuel and lit on fire!

Certainly not my thing. Soo boring.
carroll kiphen
Well if you want the millions of dollars than you either have to "go mainstream" because that's where the money is, or form your own niche. You guys have the "I WANT WHAT I WANT AND I WANT IT RIGHT NOW AND HOW I WANT IT TO BE BECAUSE I WANT IT..." Kind of thing. I think ya'll need to go to Belmont or Berklee college. Those people feel the same way. So does pretty much every other musician out there delivering pizza too. LOL!
Go do what you want to do. No one stopping you.
