This could be redone with some one sticking to their principles and not backing down even when deserted.
The Cheese stands alone
Verse
You fight half your life to get to the top.
Find there’s only more trouble there.
Your so-called friends all want what you’ve worked for.
Hang about and expect you to share.
Pre chorus
Good time Charlies and fair-weather friends are
Nowhere to be found when the party ends.
Chorus 2x
When you’re king, when you’re king of the hill.
The cheese stands alone.
Verse
They tell you what they think you want to hear.
You can’t find them when trouble comes.
When there’s a fight to be fought you can bet.
They’re all thinking bout number one.
Verse
That girl who swears she loves you for you.
Will leave when the money goes dry.
When you look like a million dollars.
You can find another rich guy.
Pre chorus
Good time Charlies and fair-weather friends are
Nowhere to be found when the party ends.
Chorus 2x
When you’re king, when you’re king of the hill.
The cheese stands alone.
Verse
When moneys not earned it’s easy to burn.
And fair-weather friends come and go.
When you’re king of the hill, king of the hill.
In the end the cheese stands alone.
Pre chorus
Good time Charlies and fair-weather friends are
Nowhere to be found when the party ends.
Chorus 2x
When you’re king, when you’re king of the hill.
The cheese stands alone.

As I mentioned on another forum...
I like the way this reads, Carroll, but I have to admit I don't remember ever having heard the expression, "the cheese stands alone." I googled it and found it is the last line of a nursery rhyme/game that I do remember from when I was a little kid. It might be better known over here, in which case it works very well.
At first I thought the cheese thing was a reference to a remark on another song of yours from a noted overstuffed sofa on yet another forum LOL.
I may or may not be an enigma
