Recorded this today. Overall I’m pretty happy with it

The Dropout

On the very first day

they labelled him special

For all the wisdom they assigned him

he never did get a say

Took a tiny fragile ego

They filled full of fake potential

Popped it then all ran away

assigned him all the blame

because he let it get away

Potential laid to waste

Cuz he didn’t partake in a game

he didn’t wanna play

Pay fifty k to regurgitate words

you don’t retain and can’t explain

but don’t refrain from sayin’

In his brain road raging

Swerving in and out of lanes

Feeling so upset set up he won’t step off

The gas too fast set on upstaging

goes to pass no time for aging now that’s past

It’s raining sideways sliding through the lanes and then he’s rolling off the highway

And he’s gone and even then not one of them’s ashamed or feels any blame for that kid who fucking died today

Who on his very first day

they all claimed was special

Who played the only role they ever gave to him who never got his say

Who had his tiny fragile ego

Filled full of faux potential

Popped and filled and popped and filled and popped again

That kid who took the blame

That kid who let it get away

That kid who died today

But hey anyway

Now they all just say he should’ve acted his age

He could’ve played the game

served his time, made his name

Or learned himself some type of trade

or found some other modest way

to do something to help build this place

I mean it’s not like he didn’t know something has to change

And instead he up and left

All the rest all the same

I get why you’d rather be a snake

than a rat in a race

It’s an easier way but it isn’t our place

we can’t match that pace

Make friends with a snake

you’ll end up on its plate

That’s not to say you have to stay

in your lane There’s an easier way

that’s the natural state of a rat race put a rat in a maze and you hope it’s amazing and it’s brazen in the way it tries to blaze a new way

and then again and then again until it breaks that fucking maze

But here’s the thing he didn’t run the race the same he figured out a better way and then he tried to say it and he did but then they all looked away they wouldn’t change I guess they just couldn’t trust what they couldn’t see right away

or folks who say things they don’t like saying

that if they concede would mean literally they were mistaken and they’re never gonna agree with just cuz they don’t wanna change

Even those who they claimed were special

And inflated till they floated too high to get home

Even those they chose to have potential

Before they sent them off to die alone

Like that kid who died today

Who they all just say should’ve acted his age

Who could’ve played the game

Who could’ve served his time

Who could’ve made his name

Who could’ve learned a trade

Who could’ve harnessed all that rage

Who could’ve harnessed all the rage

they never ever tried to explain

It’s his fault anyway

On the very first page

they labelled him special

For all the wisdom they assigned him

he never did get a say

They took a tiny fragile ego

They filled full of fake potential

Popped it then all ran away

assigned him all the blame

because he let it get away

But who cares anyway
