Jesus in the Fire or The Flames of Notre Dame???

I'm sure you're all aware that in April the Notre Dame Cathedral caught fire. I was shocked by how much history was being torched yet also amused by reports that people "saw Jesus in the flames." This is 850 years seriously downsized...

VERSE 1:
1163
On an island in the Seine
The first stone was laid
For a great monument
1314
People gathered by the steps
Could be heretic or martyr
The last Templar burns

CHORUS:
200 years to build
The vision of one man
200 years to build
800 to stand
2019
The building like a pyre
Crown of thorns saved
Was that Jesus in the fire?

VERSE 2 (1
1789
Revolution came
Beheaded the "kings"
Didn't know their mistake

CHORUS:
200 years to build
The vision of one man
200 years to build
800 to stand
2019
The building like a pyre
Crown of thorns saved
Was that Jesus in the fire?
TAG:
The building burns
It's history in flames

BRIDGE:
Bells for a cannon!
Roof for shot!
Emmanuel was spared by its 13 tonnes

The church intervened
Napoleon was crowned
The Hunchback came
The people rallied round
Gargoyles made
To perch upon the walls
2019
The building falls

CHORUS:
200 years to build
The vision of one man
200 years to build
800 to stand
2019
The building like a pyre
Crown of thorns saved
Was that Jesus in the fire?

OUTRO:
In the flame
The flames of Notre Dame

Cool lyric! Always enjoy historical context. You hope it inspires curiosity to read about what is in tge song and then it becomes even more meaningful.

Exactly what Carroll said! In fact, it made me do just that to understand the line about the "kings." I have a feeling a lot of listeners might just let those lines pass by, assuming they refer to the guillotine, when the real story is much more interesting. Those folks will also think the line "Didn't know their mistake" is lazy writing, vaguely alluding to a kind of regret for chopping off poor old Louis' head. How about this?...

Beheaded the "kings"
Wrong kings - what a shame!

or

Beheaded the "kings"
Without checking their names

One other thing worries me. For the sake of rhyme, are you going to feel compelled to pronounce the "a" in the last word as in "lame?" I fear that we might actually be able to hear you wincing as you do that.

I may or may not be an enigma

Exactly so. There was so much history to tell but only 3 minutes to do it in. I had hoped I'd given enough information to grab the interest but not so much as to weigh it down. Thanks Carroll.

Thanks Gavin. That's a very good point. I was so immersed in the subject that I forgot that people wouldn't necessarily see what I meant or know the history around it. I will definitely clarify the story of the beheaded statues. Thank you for pointing it out.

As for mispronouncing Notre Dame, I assure you I will not/could not say "Dame" as in "Same." Ugh and ew. First of all, the Canadian in me just cringes at the thought and second, I don't think our French fans would ever take me seriously again  ?

Aw, thanks Deac. I love to read and I love to learn. It was a fun way to spend my evening. Glad you like it. I'll be sure to post the song when it's done.

Well THAT was an education. Wow! I've never heard much Neil Young and certainly not in that way. Tbh, I was kinda speechless. What an epic song. Found the 1991 live version was even MORE epic than the Farm Aid one (if that's possible):

So is that a request for an ES cover, Carroll?  ?

No just thought you'd enjoy it. You can't really pin him down on a particular style. He was always full of surprises.

I absolutely enjoyed it. Totally. In fact, now I'm listening to Dave Matthews Band cover of it. I'm converted.  ?

Powerfinger was good, but not as epic as Cortez...

That one was just amazing.
