I've always admired how some people here write songs in English when it's not their native tongue and appreciated how hard this is. I was recently in France for several days visiting my daughter in Amiens and found myself frequently walking along or across the river Somme. Something about the setting, the rhythm of walking and a couple of beers inside me got the creative juices flowing and this simple little song took shape. It should be simple enough to understand for anyone with schoolboy/girl French and for anyone else I've provided a translation - literal rather than literary as there's no attempt to capture the rhyme or rhythm of the original, only the meaning.

I dare say it could be improved by a native French speaker, but it was fun to try.

By the banks of the Somme, one day in Amiens
I took the courage to take your hand
I gave you my heart and you gave me yours
By the banks of the Somme, that day in Amiens

The years flow by through a crowd of memories
But I dare to hope that past joy
Will be the joy to come
The Somme flows still and carries the love
Which I send you from so far
To Amiens, where I kissed you for the first time

I gave you my heart and you gave me yours
By the banks of the Somme, one day in Amiens

I want to tease you about your accent but I won't lol...

Sweet-n-simple. Your best writing always seems to be inspired by your daughter 🙂

@japov Well, the fact that it's in French is a pretty good incentive to keep it simple LOL. Yes, my daughters do provide a lot of inspiration. Not directly this time but if it weren't for her I wouldn't have been in Amiens, so I guess that counts. 🙂
