Nobody like to hear themselves sing. Nothing wrong with your voice. In fact, I think it could maybe be brought forward just a tiny bit in the mix to make it easier to understand what you are singing. How far are you standing from the mic?

I like acoustic JAPOV. That's a really good swing you have going there. Maybe a little variety might help. Another instrument coming in somewhere maybe?

I'm not sure I would be up to the job, to be honest. I'll give it another listen. Probably won't be today though.

What is it you don't like about your voice? Is it simply that it doesn't sound like you thought it did? Most people don't realize how the vibration of their chest and head alters the way they hear it themselves.
If you can put your finger on what you don't like you can correct or alter it of course. Sometimes we don't realize how we mis-pronounce things until we hear it played back; like 'tuh' instead of 'to', 'fer' instead of 'for', 'muh' instead of 'my'. Sometimes those work because that's the way everyone says it. Sometimes they don't. Tweaking single words here and there can be very effective.

Despite 1,000's of years of Songwriting humans have not exhausted the possibilities. There will always be another Song to be written. Someone will write it. Why not you? www.garyeandrews.com

Firstly, just because I can carry a tune about 70% of the time doesn’t mean I should sing to begin with lol...
Yea, it’s mostly all about the tone. I'm constantly trying to make myself sound like someone I’m not I guess... Here's another mix with hardy any Eq on the vox...

I like your voice, Tony. My thinking is that your mix is letting you down. The vocal sounds wispy. This is not a lack of power in your voice. You could try adding a couple low volume double ups to thicken it up a bit. Or, you could take a look at your low and low-mid frequencies to give the vocal more prominence in the mix. If you cut too much low-frequency out of a vocal, it can come across as wispy and powerless. The second mix here (without EQ) sounds thicker than the first, so it might be about frequency.

Also, do you run a high pass filter on your vocals? If you do, set your HPF a bit lower than the lowest note sung.

Whispy's a good way to put it I guess..... I think my voice sounds more "natural" in my rough phone recordings....
My voice with a mic always seems to have a "tin can" quality to it?

A mic doesn't accurately represent your voice. It emphasizes some things and loses others. My mic, for instance is a tad too hot for my voice, but it's what I've got and with enough dampening around the mic, I can get a recording that will clean up nicely in post (despite the peaks sounding more on the "ugh" side of the fence than the "wow" side). If you're getting a tin can quality, you probably need to dampen things a little. Try getting out in that shed of yours and making a wee screen for the mic to wrap around the back and sides. Pad the screen well (I use egg carton foam, but loosely draped fabric is better than nothing (if egg carton foam isn't in the budget). The screen should sit about 4-6 inches from the mic. Any more and you get bouncing. It's insane how much of a difference a bit of dampening does to your recordings. The difference is HUGE. If you need to test this out for yourself, get a piece of packing foam. Sing at the foam. The vocal is bouncy right? Now wrap the foam in a towel and sing to it. Totally flat.

Interesting info Jenny. Does this make a difference even with a mic set up for a cardioid pattern, which should be rejecting sounds from behind and to the sides?

Tony, I wonder what effect it would have if you stood a little closer to the mic?

I've been tryin' to explain to ya'll for years now... I'm not a singer lol. I have no breath control, I’m pitchy as hell, I’m too loud or too soft, I don’t practice singing at all... I sing enough to record and that’s it. So, my only saving grace is lots of compression with a limiter and I generally just stick the mike in my mouth!

Absolutely. What a screen does is it reduces how much the sound bounces around. Mine is a cardioid.

Yeah, but dude, you were asking for advice on getting a better vocal sound so that's what I gave. That tinny sound has nothing to do with your voice, no matter how untrained it is. It's the mic interacting with the room and how you treat the recording.  ?

Ok, so you're saying that "tin can" sound is basically the room..... I've got a closet that’ll fix that!
