You gave me a pencil
an' a box of paint
a Book of Changes an' a photograph.
You made me laugh,
you made me cry,
you let me fall mad in love with you,
while you just stood by.
You found me pleadin' innocent,
uprooted and alone.
You found me and you fooled me,
made me think I found my home.
Oh thinkin' 'bout the seasons,
ain't it funny how they change,
how the new becomes the old,
the familiar becomes the strange.
The friend becomes the enemy,
the kind becomes the cruel,
the sunset turns into the night,
an' the wise are made the fool.
You changed me more than anyone,
turned me around in every way,
ain't it funny how we kid ourselves,
the ever-changing tricks we play.
I like your style of writing Polly 🙂
The intro/outro must be something very specific, what's this about?

The Book of Changes is the Chinese Taoist fortune telling system. The whole song is about the Taoist idea of things constantly changing into their opposite.
This song is also about some feelings about a specific relationship I had, and I wrote the beginning part a long time ago. He actually did give me a Book of Changes. I felt I was tricked, and for me trickery (and irony) is an essential aspect of the Universe.
So it all kind of seemed to fall into place, for me at least. This recording isn't good enough, and I'm working on learning the song better and making a better recording.
Thanks for listening @japov!
