Here's a song I wrote about separation by time zone as part of my 30-day songwriting challenge.

[verse]

I know it’s getting late where you are,

But I want your day to hold its weight

And cradle you to sleep,

Tell me all about it,

We’re further than we’ve been from each other,

When 11 thousand miles becomes 22

Thousand, that’s practically an ocean,

America.

[chorus]

I’m two hours behind,

It’s like standing in a line

Of your priorities, did I make the cut?

You’re two hours ahead,

And I hope you’ve gone to bed,

And yet I don’t, just say goodnight,

I think you won’t.

[verse]

It’s been a week of conversation drought,

And I now know what they mean by continental

Drifting, it’s not the cell phone signal,

It’s us,

There’s an odd sense of disconnecting,

Like a joke I finally get after everybody’s laughed,

It wasn’t funny

Being the last one in the punch line,

[chorus]

I’m two hours behind,

It’s like standing in a line

Of your priorities, did I make the cut?

You’re two hours ahead,

And I hope you’ve gone to bed,

And yet I don’t, just say goodnight,

I know you won’t.

Won’t,

[bridge]

There’s nothing I would rather do

Than stay up late and talk to you,

You won’t,

[chorus]

I’m two hours behind,

It’s like standing in a line

Of your priorities, did I make the cut?

You’re two hours ahead,

And I hope you’ve gone to bed,

And yet I don’t,

Just say goodnight,

Just say goodnight,

Just say goodnight…

(attached the crappy phone recording of this, since I haven't had the time to properly record)

There's a lot I like about this, Phoebe. The subject for one. I can certainly relate. This one has your usual charm. As I think I've said before, I'd happily listen to you singing the phone book.

I don't really get these lines. I think I must be missing something.

When 11 thousand miles becomes 22
Thousand, that’s practically an ocean,
America.

The earth's circumference is a little under 25 thousand miles, so it's not possible to be 22 thousand miles away. It's just possible to be 11 thousand, but that would be a whole lot more than 2 hours time difference and a lot more than an ocean. I'm sure I'm being too literal, but I don't get the metaphor.

I may or may not be an enigma
