To be a painter

Verse

There are things I long to say to her

But I can’t find the words.

I stammer and speak clumsily;

Say trite things that she’s heard.

I struggle as if I were a mime;

My canvas the thin air.

I’m bound and trapped by lack of words;

So much that I can’t share.

Chorus

I am but a poet.

I lack an artist’s hand.

All I have are my words.

I pray she understands.

Ah! To be a painter

To capture what I feel.

Oh! What a masterpiece

The canvas would reveal.

Verse

If she could see the way I see her

I’m sure she’d be amazed.

If I could tell her how I feel

In strokes of pastel shades.

If she’d take my hand she’d understand

There’s more to love than words.

Lord I wish I was a painter

So I could capture her.

Chorus

I am but a poet.

I lack an artist’s hand.

All I have are my words.

I pray she understands.

Ah! To be a painter

To capture what I feel.

Oh! What a masterpiece

The canvas would reveal.

Bridge

Oh! To be a painter

Like Michelangelo;

Capture how I feel for her;

Maybe then she’d know.

Verse

If I could capture on the canvas

The emerald of her eyes.

The sunlight dancing in her hair

the curve from hip to thigh.

If I could bring to life her laughter

What her heart does to mine

I could claim to be an artist

Instead of writing lines.

Chorus

I am but a poet.

I lack an artist’s hand.

All I have are my words.

I pray she understands.

Ah! To be a painter

To capture what I feel.

Oh! What a masterpiece

The canvas would reveal.
