The other day an old man came by the job site asking if we could move some couches for him. He explained that he’d had surgery last week to remove a large tumour from his brain, and due to a related leg issue wasn’t able to do it himself.
Obviously we moved the couches, and he and I got to talking for a minute. He spoke at length and ease about his health, and I was moved by how measuredly positive he was about the whole thing. It got me thinking back to when I was younger, when I was once hospitalized with what eventually turned out to just be ulcerative colitis, but initially was just internal bleeding of unknown cause (not a brain tumour, but still relatively scary shit imo) Anyways, I got to thinking about how terrifying a place to be alone with your thoughts a hospital bed is, and I wrote this song about that.
I’m very new to writing music with a synthesizer and the style really brings my shoddy singing to the fore, but on the whole I think this is one of the better songs I’ve written. Hope ya like it.
Once I Was Just Like You
Hey kid, you’ll be alright
You’ll get better give it time
And you’ll lead a good life
I know, once I was just like you
Don’t mind the hallway light
Lord know I know it’s bright
But you’ll sleep okay tonight
I know one time I slept there too
I know the emptiness you’re feeling
I’ve felt that lack of hope in ever leaving
I’ve met the ghosts that haunt the dreams
You’d rather lie awake than be in
And I’m here tonight
And I can breathe alright
Though I’d sworn that I would die
Back when I was just like you
Know the sun will also rise
Know that every tear will dry
So if you need to cry
Just know you’ll be alright
I’m here tonight
And I can breathe alright
Though I’d sworn that I would die
Back when I was just like you
I know the emptiness you’re feeling
I’ve felt that lack of hope in ever leaving
I’ve met the ghosts that haunt the dreams
You’d rather lie awake than be in
And I’m here tonight
And I can breathe alright
Though I’d sworn that I would die
Back when I was just like you
Know the sun will also rise
Just like every tear will dry
So if you need to cry, just cry
But just know you’ll be alright
And know kid, I was just like you
