This song’s very long, beyond that I’m not sure how I’d describe it, but I like it. It’s got a surprising number of layers to it (I think).

Sounds Inside My Head

I tried to play it smart

And I topped up my tank

Then my car wouldn’t start

Ironic how things seem to end

These days before they start

Like my life’s someone else’s show

And I’m just here to play a part

The one thing that I feared the most

about it from the start

I’ve tried

To pack my bags and go

I’ve tried

To run the open run

I’ve tried

To set out on my own

I’ve tried but every time

It ends in going home

If I’m not feeling how I did

Then I’m not feeling how I do

I cycle through four humours

Like the seasons used to do

Sometimes old yella popping back

Sometimes to sleep dream screen’s gone black

Mirroring the melancholy not to be

Scene screaming

stuck phlegm clearing

sturdy stoicism stunting

sad soft stupid steady growing

White noise of another head art attack

And then step back

right when it seems all I’ve got left to see is grey

The levee breaks the dam gives way

and right when I’m about to faint

The blood comes rushin’ back to red my face

I’ve got big plans tomorrow

I just hope they’re not too far

To go pretend the party ends

If I should leave the bar

If some far off day brings an imposter

It even learns the date I lost her

You should know

there’s a dart burn mark

in the headstock of my guitar

Because it wouldn’t be mine

If it didn’t have scars

Or if it never tried to go but didn’t ever get far

I’ve tried

To pack my bags and go

I’ve tried

To run the open run

I’ve tried

To set out on my own

I’ve tried but every time

It always ends in going home

I’ve tried my best at losing hope

I’ve tried my best to piss and mope

But every time I run unslack the rope

Stops short before I go

Too far off leash to find my way back home

And I go home

Then my melancholy flips

And I’m spraying from the hip

And I know I must be dreaming

Cuz the target that I’m shooting at only has one hole in it

Though I’m feeling like LeBron I know

James can’t never need to even nearly brush a rim

But it’s not like I give a shit

Cuz dream or fantasy I’m living it

Deluded things Reality

they’re not that different can’t you see

I can’t be you I’m only me

and if the one thing in this world that I can’t doubt is that there is a me then

I’m not living fantasy my eyes see the one reality I know with some degree of certainty to be

so pardon me

If you find me stubborn I believe

All sorts of things but only if they correlate with more likely things that I’ve perceived so please know that I was listening and there’s a reason that I disagree that I saw your point I just see past what you’re seeing

Think beyond what you’re being

Can’t believe some things I hear

From people better off than me

The lack of decency regarding acts of empathy like we’ve lost our humanity maybe the lack of tragedy has normalized the cries of those not hurt or hungry

But it seems to me like people are starving

I was only able to make out the lyrics because I was reading along. I don't know if it's your recording set up or your enunciation, probably a bit of both, but the words are lost to the listener. That's a pity, as there are some intriguing lines in there. I must admit that, as a whole, it didn't make sense to me. Maybe it's not meant to. The title suggests that it's a stream of consciousness kind of thing.

There's not much of a melody here and not a lot of what one might call singing, but that's OK. It's all about the atmosphere and the words - so let us hear them 🙂

I like the atmosphere and feel of this. I think you have something here. The way to listen to this would be just to let it wash over you. But for that to be a pleasurable experience, you need to be able to make out the words. Did I mention that already, LOL?

Hey Gavin, thanks for the feedback! Lyrically it’s not necessarily written through a stream-of-consciousness method, but rather as an analysis of a stream-of-consciousness, if that makes sense. The narrator’s describing the world through a shifting lens of perception, which through the first half is generally melancholy, but with small shifts in mindset that are supposed to represent the crockery that’s known as the four humours, and the more obvious flip is supposed to represent a flip from depression into hypomania, then the turn to instrumental music is supposed to be the escalation into full-blown mania, dropping any logical pretence it had and just becoming a mess of noise. Then the cool down bit’s supposed to be back to depression. It’s a hard song to follow, if it even does actually communicate at some level what I intended, which I’m never really sure about. I’ve gotta keep working on the enunciation thing, someday I’ll figure it out! 😛 Cheers

That's kind of what I meant. Not that you just sat down and wrote whatever came into your head, but that the effect you were going for was stream of consciousness. It takes a lot of work to make a song seem like it's just random thoughts in someone's head.

I actually did one kind of similar in a way. Maybe I'll post it. It's not really new, but I do intend to go back and rework some of the lyrics, so maybe a bit of feedback would be helpful.

Are you just singing into your phone? Maybe a decent mic would help with the intelligibility thing. They don't have to be expensive.

Haha, right sorry, when ya explained it it seemed immediately obvious that was what you meant 😛

And yeah, I’d love to check out your take on the style and give you whatever feedback I can! Lemme know when ya post it, or feel free to pm it if you’d rather.

As far as recording, yeah I’m just singing into a cellphone. I think apple sells mics that directly interface with your phone. Might pick one of those up, can’t imagine it’d hurt.

cheers

Rhys, if you have a computer available, you might want to start using that with an inexpensive DAW and a USB mic, like a Yeti Blue or something.
