Verse

I've climbed as high as i can

On my family tree.

Some limbs below bear rotten fruit.

Don't blame their tastes on me.

That monkey is my newphew

On my father's side.

He ain't got all his marbles.

His cousin is his bride.

Chorus

Family tree, family tree

They're a part of me.

Can't fight it, rewrite it.

It's my family tree.

Verse

There've been some grafts in the past

Now a part of me.

We share the same roots

Though we have different leaves.

Still I'm proud I'm not ashamed

To claim them as kin.

We could fill a zoo with our clan.

Party with bathtub gin.

Family tree, family tree.

They're a part of me.

Can't fight it, rewrite it.

It's my family tree.

Bridge

We can't deny who we are.

What makes us unique.

We can't deny what we are.

Those roots run too deep.

Verse

I've climbed as high as i can

On my family tree.

Some limbs below bear rotten fruit.

Don't blame their tastes on me.

Chorus

Family tree, family tree.

They're a part of me.

Can't fight it , rewrite it.

It's my family tree.

Hey Gavin! Let’s get some clever "ironic" branching going on here! ?

just some suggestion changes if ya like em use em I sang it over

Verse

I've climbed as high as I can

On my family tree.

Some limbs I stepped on had bad fruit.

Don't blame their tastes on me.

Chorus

Family tree, family tree

They're all part of my genealogy.

Can't fight it, rewrite it. to any degree

so I acknowledge  It's my family tree.

There've been some grafts in the past

that didn't work out right

they caused the fruit on the tree

to be plagued with blight.

I've added a few suggestions below.

Verse
I've climbed as high as I can climb
On my family tree.
Some branches below bear rotten fruit.
Don't blame their tastes on me.
If a monkey grabs your hat
While swinging from a lower limb
Don't come asking me about that
I'm nothing to do with him

Chorus
Family tree, family tree
They're a part of me.
Can't fight it, rewrite it.
It's my family tree.

Verse
There've been some grafts in the past
Now a part of me.
We all share the same roots
Though we have different leaves.
A branch may fall, but though now small
A newly sprouting twig
Will tap the sap that sustains us all
And one day grow as big

Chorus
Family tree, family tree.
They're a part of me.
Can't fight it, rewrite it.
It's my family tree.

Bridge
We can't deny who we are.
What makes us unique.
We can't deny what we are.
Those roots run too deep.

Verse
I've climbed as high as I can climb
On my family tree.
Some limbs below bear rotten fruit.
Don't blame their tastes on me.

Chorus
Family tree, family tree.
They're a part of me.
Can't fight it , rewrite it.
It's my family tree.

I like the addition to the 1st verse. The addition to the second verse seems a bit awkward. If it sings ok im fine with it. What do you think.

Not sure which chorus we should go with. Mine or all for the Lord's. Once again sing them both and see what sounds smoother. If i sing it .it all sounds like crap! Lol

here's another different version of it

Verse

I've climbed as high as I can, out on my family tree-ee

some had bad fruit but don't blame their tastes on me
Some of the limbs went a little too far-rr
and the crooks and dead wood  made way to loosen the  bark

I'm a bit short on time too, but hope to get back to this at the weekend. Carroll, I agree that the addition I suggested to the second verse might not be great. I think it's fine in itself, and the message fits well, but the tone of the language might be a bit off - it sounds more like something you'd sing in church.

As for the chorus, I think Carroll's original is more "chorusy" and inviting to sing along to. On the other hand Allfor's got some good lines, and genealogy is such a fun word to sing at the end of a line. Can we find a way to combine the best of both? Maybe something like this?

Family tree, family tree
It's a part of me
Good old genealogy
It's my family tree.

I may or may not be an enigma
