Ashes of the past
Verse
Blow the dust from the stone.
A story’s there to read.
One that’s old been re told.
But one that few men heed.
Pre chorus
The wind will blow the rain will fall.
Erase all trace and sign.
The years will pass the fame will fade.
It’s part of earth’s design.
Chorus
I’ve seen what’s in the future.
The ashes of the past.
Yes the ashes of the past.
Verse
Brush the sand from the stone.
The story tells it all.
It’s been read and re read
Of how great men will fall.
Pre chorus
The wind will blow the rain will fall.
Erase all trace and sign.
The years will pass the fame will fade.
It’s part of earth’s design.
Chorus
I’ve seen what’s in the future.
The ashes of the past.
Yes the ashes of the past.
Bridge
In the ruins of ancient cities
Whose walls have fallen down.
Live the ghosts of priests and princes
Once men of great renown.
Verse
They knew but did not act.
Tis why they did not last.
Such lament such sorrow
They did not heed the past.
Pre chorus
The wind will blow the rain will fall.
Erase all trace and sign.
The years will pass the fame will fade.
It’s part of earth’s design.
Chorus
I’ve seen what’s in the future.
The ashes of the past.
Yes the ashes of the past.

Hey, Carroll, I think this might be more memorable if you related it to a particular place. It could just be a case of making it the title. "Carthage" or maybe "Pompeii," with the reference to ashes. That puts us there in the ruins.
Just a thought.
I may or may not be an enigma

I'd rather keep it generalized. It applies to almost any empire that has existed.
