A promise is a promise
I remember she was laughing.
Fighting back the tears.
Pretending she was holding up.
Ignoring what she feared.
Saw it in her blue eyes.
She’s seen the face of death.
Felt his hand upon her;
The whisper of his breath.
Touched her face with my hand.
She broke down and cried.
I said, I’ve got you love.
I’ll be by your side.
A promise is a promise.
I will keep my word.
A bargain is a bargain.
My life Lord for hers.
She forced a smile and said.
I’ll try being strong.
Maybe if I’m lucky.
Old Doc got it wrong.
I talked to god and asked him.
Can we make a trade?
It’s been two years now and counting.
Perhaps prayers do come true.
She’s back to laughing having fun
But my debt’s coming due.
A promise is a promise.
I will keep my word.
A bargain is a bargain.
My life Lord for hers.
