Have you ever happened upon a bug caught in a spider's web and felt so sorry for the poor little fellow that you just had to do something to help? I have. Then, of course, I feel sorry for the spider who was looking forward to a tasty meal. I guess I'm just one sorry human being.

Here are the lyrics, although it's probably more fun just to listen. All comments and suggestions appreciated.

SOMETHING’S EATING GEOFFREY

Words and music by Gavin Sinclair

Something’s eating Geoffrey
Though he’s not sure just what
It’s hard to see what it could be
When you’re looking down it’s throat
And though for a beetle being eaten
Is a pretty standard way to die
It’s all still rather disappointing
Geoffrey’s not a happy guy

Hanging around, silkily bound
While a monster eats him alive
Waving all six of his legs around
Oops, better make that five
His beetle brain’s not big enough
To aspire to a lofty goal
But catch of the day on a spider buffet
He's not comfortable in the role

Oh Geoffrey, my friend
What a very sticky end!
I’ll take my knife and set you free
Hanging by a thread
And very nearly dead
Poor old Geoffrey you’re quite a lot like me

You may say it’s nature’s way
Just what her creatures do
The big ones eat the little ones
Till they get eaten too
But really, I mean, I’m asking you, people
Is this all there is to life?
Beetle eats an aphid, spider eats a beetle
Then the spider’s eaten by his wife
Then...

She ends up in the gizzard of a lizard
Then the belly of a snake
Which makes an awesome dinner for a possum
I mean, for goodness’ sake!

Oh Geoffrey, my friend
What a very sticky end!
I’ll take my knife and set you free (there you go Geoffrey)
Hanging by a thread
And very nearly dead
Poor old Geoffrey you’re an awful lot like me

A praying mantis is just saying grace
Before lunching on a stink bug’s face
Crawl away, Geoffrey to a safer place
On your five remaining legs

Geoffrey, my friend
You’ve dodged your bitter end!
Make the most of this second chance at life
For when we’re in a bind
Of the usually fatal kind
It’s rare that there’s someone there with a knife

Thanks, D. I think MAB said something in his video about how anything you see around you can serve as inspiration. It sure can 🙂

Yes, I did enjoy that line, John. It's probably obvious by the way I drew it out, savoring each syllable, LOL.

Hi, Gavin!

I like this song very much 🙂

Very cute and easy on the ears.

It's defenitely your thing.

Many good ideas and metaphors, I like first lines, it's sounds like that Geoffrey is a human.

Thank you for sharing, it's great.

Hi Alexey, nice to see you here. Welcome to the Junction!

Glad you enjoyed the song. I have had a comment somewhere else that it would be better if the melody were less happy and bouncy, a bit darker like the subject. I kind of hope the contrast adds to the humor, but not sure..

Gavin, thank you for your invitation once again 🙂

That's very nice of you.

I like those parts in your song when you use conversational phrases though it can disturb the flow. I like that intonation.

If you find the melody too bouncy you can add some more sarcastic tones to your singing, maybe it can do the trick.

But for me it is Ok.

lol lol lol that's great.

"Hanging by a thread

and there's your little twist. Deep Gavin.

"A praying mantis is just saying grace

Those vicious praying mantis (manti???). I get them in my house over the summer. The babies are adorable and the grown ups are almost human in the way they turn their heads to look at you, but MAN they're vicious. Bye bye monarch butterfly.   🙁

Well done Gav

Thanks for listening, Jen.  Yes, those mantises are formidable creatures. I remember reading Gerald Durrell's "My Family and Other Animals" as a child. It describes his childhood in Corfu and there's a passage where he recounts an epic struggle between a praying mantis and a gecko. I was rooting for the gecko and in the end it won, but it was no foregone conclusion. They've even been known to catch humming birds. On the plus side, they are one of the few creatures that will eat a stinkbug.
