I used a pair of twigs as chopsticks to remove my little hitchhiker, and then gave everything else a very thorough inspection.That done, coffee and breakfast imbibed, I resumed packing up camp.There are various schools of thought on how to properly Tetris a backpack, and pretty much all of it goes right out the window on the last day of a trip.Many long minutes of packing, hoisting, adjusting, unloading, and repacking often go into the initial stage, owing to its being conducted in the comfort of one’s own home.This was especially true for me, in that moment, knowing what awaited me the moment I got cell service again.And I do love me some heights.I’m the guy whose face is compressed against the window on airplanes whenever I can manage it.But for preference, I like to explore depths, and the greater the better.This is both a literal and a figurative position.The literal depths of places like the Grand Canyon will hold a tremendous fascination for me as long as I’ve got functioning gray matter between my ears.But so will the depths of human depravity, which seem always to be laid their barest by calamity.Nor is this necessarily a morbid position to take, or at least not altogether.Diamonds in the rough are valuable because of the surrounding rough, after all.Similarly, the heights of human goodness are underscored and illuminated only in stark contrast to their opposite, darker manifestations.The starker the contrast, the better the view.But they were there.All that lay ahead of me, back in April of 2020, along with about a vertical mile of trudging.Each upward step brought me closer to something I did not want to face.It was like I’d spent a long weekend strenuously luxuriating in a redrock green room while the stagehands completely overhauled the set.They didn’t tell me the nature of the play billed to follow, but I could guess.All the world’s indeed a stage, as the man said.
