This is mostly just a vanity post. Got a real nice review from a Canadian music blog, Roots Music Canada, and I was pretty excited about that so I wanted to share 😛

Bravo for the review you got from Roots Music Canada.

You have a peculiar way to sing, write and deliver your songs and play guitar.

You are unique. This is a great quality.

Have fun and good luck with your projects.

Congrats Rhys, great review, just got done reading it and I believe they are saying what most everyone here believes.  You do have an unorthodox method to your songs which draws us to you.  Keep it up my friend, good luck and best wishes,

Rhys, congrats on any kind words about your music you can get.  My good friend MAB often says our greatest rewards come in the smallest of places, and I think everyone is telling you we sense your talent and recognize your future abilities.  However; forgive me for not being one to just throw out a "pat on the back" because we all have improvements we can make in trying to get better.  I could easily throw out a "pat on the back" if you were simply an average amateur like me but I sense you have a much better talent and the desire to make your music far above any amateur like I could write or perform.

Consider I'm just an old beer drinking S.O.B. and I'm even hard of hearing at that; so don't take my advice as the gospel by any means.  However; I can sense you have a talent for music with your original written songs and performing them.  My suggestion is simply this.  Drop the long into because repeating the same thing twice simply allows the listener to tune your song out and you truly need to get to the lyrics and tell your story to keep them interested.  Now, I mentioned earlier I was kind of hard of hearing; so I would suggest you try really hard to enunciate your words better so everyone can understand them.  Perhaps the problem is my hearing or maybe it's the mix, and maybe it's your enunciation, I truly don't know.

At any rate, I feel you have some serious talent and I'd like to see you take every step you can do to make your music the best it can be.  I truly encourage you to continue in your work because I feel you can be really good at it.

Hey, thanks a lot man! That really means a lot! Sorry about the difficulty hearing my lyrics, I’m gonna go out on a limb and say it’s my singing/mixing more than your hearing that’s the issue (I’m assuming, since others complain about that and if you very generally couldn’t hear lyrics I assume you’d know :P) As far as cutting the songs to keep them interesting, I’ve been thinking about that. I think it’s a shame that the market seems to demand you drive straight to the point in music these days, but my generation’s all about instant gratification and I don’t see that changing soon, so I agree that I probably need to adapt there. As far as the self-deprecating stuff, I try not to believe in things like good and bad musicians. In such a subjective field, you can label yourself good or bad without any to prove it, so I’d say you’re only as good as you perceive yourself! ... And moving on from that sappiness, your comments are always appreciated! Thanks and cheers

Enjoyed your tune. Has a nice happy go lucky vibe to it. Stays focused on that theme very well. I also liked that the song wasn't really about a $50 cowboy hat, but used the hat to relate to the singers attitude.

But, I must say, and my hearing is pretty good, there were a few spots I just could not understand your lyrics. Overall, it was fine. Also really liked your guitar and overall production. Much better than anything I produce. Maybe I could get some advice?

Hahaha, Od I told ya it’s not just you! 😛 Thanks for the feedback, Phil. Enunciation has been an ongoing battle for me, in large part because I’ve been singing for two years or so, and only when nobody’s home to hear it, which sorta truncates my learning, or at least slows it. As far as production, I use GarageBand for iOS (which is free, just need an iPhone) and a Martin 000-15m (which is imo the best workhorse guitar on the planet, but at the end of the day is just an acoustic guitar). I’m happy to help any way I can regarding production advice, but I’m far from an oracle of wisdom on the topic 😛 Cheers

Rhys (a very unusual name I might add, I've never heard it before but I like it).........Anyway.

I'm going to bust your chops a little bit by being my cynical old self; but I truly only mean to be constructive with my comments.  Okay, your somewhat new at writing and performing but you show some talent with this song and I truly like your style and your voice.  By the way, feel free to open an account at my local beer supplier "Russell's Drive-Thru" to buy this old guy's beer and I'll keep the compliments coming.  However; until then, you'll have to deal with my well intended criticism and my sorry as*ed advise (but only if you care to).

OD Disclaimer:   I'm not a performer, I can only strum a few chords on guitar, and I can only sing well enough to get my song ideas to much better singers and musicians to perform.  So by admitting all of that, I'm truly not trying to be self-deprecating at all, merely stating the truth; which I've come to accept even though I wish things were different.....Anyway......

By listening to the recording of this song you have provided; which I understand you did on your own; I have to say it is really poor quality and not representing your song very well at all (or at least not as well as it could be).  Now that probably doesn't matter that much because I realize you are new to things and most likely not trying to use this particular recording to break into the big time anyway.  Now, if I may comment about the big time.  I would suggest you continue to improve and learn before even trying to go down that road; if you are even thinking in those terms.  I only have limited knowledge about the "big time" but I can tell you from my experience of meeting many that have tried, it's a tough business and very few will ever succeed.  Personally, I would suggest anyone with the "Dream" find a career that will pay their bills and keep music as a fun hobby; but that is just me.  Regardless; I would offer this advise to you.  Continue to practice, write, perform, and gain all the experience you can get in order to increase your skill and performance level.  That will help you become a better singer/songwriter whether you keep music as a hobby or even think about ever trying to take it to a Professional level.

Your recording and production level is pretty basic and you could really benefit with seeking out better musicians or those with much better recording equipment and skills than you have at your disposal at this time.  Find them, become friends with them, learn from them, and maybe you'll be able to work with them some day.  Music is truly a journey and a learning experience that takes time to perfect and you're merely scratching the surface at this point (if you don't mind me saying so).  So while you show some true talent and promise, I don't want you to think recording your own stuff is your best option at this point; maybe your only option right now so that is okay; but you need to seek help from those with better recording skills than your own.

Now; my advise may not be worth much but you're down to owing me a 12 pack at this point.  I'll provide a number to Russell's Drive-Thru for you to pay off what you owe me.  You'll need a credit card, so you can either send me your credit card number; pen number; and saving account number and I'll take care of it myself; or you can contact Russell personally to set up an account with him.  Ha!!! (I'm only teasing you Brother).

Hey dude, don’t worry I take no offence. As far as the beer, I would if I did but I don’t really drink these days 😛 As far as the music, I’ve been singing for a short time, and recording an even shorter one, but I’ve been writing music since I was like 12 or something and playing guitar basically forever. So hopefully that at least partially explained the talent discrepancy. I’ve also got no computer and exactly 0 budget for recording software or hardware, and/or studio time. So I wouldn’t expect my recording quality to improve in the foreseeable future. It’s a bit unfortunate, but it is what it is! Anyways, I’m nothing if not self-aware and makong money from music isn’t something I’m banking on. But it’s a hobby I love, and I’m gonna keep trying to get as good as I can for as long as I can! Appreciate the feedback, hope you’re having a good day! Cheers

Rhys, please know I was totally teasing you about buying my beer (I'm sure you knew that)  but everyone that knows me realizes this old guy likes his beer. Oh, I've straddled that line of liking it too much at times but lately I've really made an effort to cut back a little; if not a lot.  Anyway...

The fact you don't have funds for new recording equipment or recording time in a studio is not uncommon and a simple fact all of us can relate to because we all started out poor while being young like you.   Hell, my first guitar come out of a pawn shop and cost my parents $40 dollars in the mid-sixties and probably caused one of my siblings to go without a new pair of shoes for awhile.  Ha!!!

Hey, I can assure you things will improve over time and you're finances will improve as long as your willing to be stead fast, willing to work, and be patient.  That will take some time and may be long down the road so we don't even want to wait that long before you begin to work on writing better songs and making better recordings.  What I'm suggesting is a plan to visit clubs, coffee shops, and make new friends that will become "live long friends" and allow them to help you on your journey.  Support them, get to know them, and become a genuine friend with them; not merely for the purpose of them to help you; but more of a win/win situation for all of you.  I guarantee, all of us with the love of music are more than willing to help one another; even a well seasoned old bastard in your area that has been involved in the business for years (at any level) because we all love anyone with a desire to learn and they'd be more than happy to help you out.  Now when I mention a well seasoned old bastard, you may think I'm referring to myself but I truly have very limited skills other than loving music over the years.  I'm talking about some old seasoned bastard in your area that may be willing to help out a young music minded kid like yourself with some potential talent.  Believe me, they are in your area, you just have to go seek them out.

The fact you have been writing songs since you were 12 years old if fine to describe your love and desire to write music; but I would suggest all of those years of trying to teach yourself won't amount to a hill of beans compared to what you can learn from a seasoned songwriter; if you can find one (and they are out there).  Your guitar playing is okay but you'll be amazed when you work with professional musicians for the first time and you realize how their talents come so easy to them and can truly improve your music.  Anyway..... my suggestion for you is to seek out those with the same passion for music that you have and build a friendly relationship with them.  They are in your area so go find them.
