Check out our new single on Spotify and anywhere else you sream or download music.

Make me rich enough to afford the kind of lifestyle a member of the liberal elite deserves. A million plays might get me a half-decent bottle of claret to share with my equally elite chums before the opera.

Here's the SoundCloud link, JAPOV. Sorry I didn't post it here. I had posted it a while ago at SW101 and was just announcing the fact that I'd released it as a single.

Ha! Fabulous Gavin. Congratulations. "Caber-Net" lol. A goofy song by a goofy guy...and yet, it also says something.

"...who makes it to the end of the opera and pretends he wasn't praying for them all to die" -- lol

I used to go dancing at the local German Club with my girlfriends when I was a lot younger. The music reminds me of those halcyon days so I'm predisposed to love it.  🙂

Glad you liked it, Jen. German Club? I hope you dusted off your dirndl and danced along to this one with a stein of Maibock in your hand.

This song is supposed just to be a bit of fun, but it caused a bit of friction in the band. Our fiddler, Beau Strokes from right here in North Carolina, is very conservative and assumed I was too, since he had never observed me burning a flag or participating in satanic rituals with Hillary Clinton and George Soros. It took quite a lot of persuasion to get him to play on this. In the end, only the fact that nobody ever actually listens to our stuff convinced him that there would be no harm done.
Against Beau's advice, we premiered this song at a social at the Falling Rock, North Carolina Elks Club in aid of the Association of Confederate Bikers. Our Swedish sound engineers Max and Minnie Mumsetting managed to make this recording just before the trouble started.

One could argue back and forth about songs that might alienate one set of listeners and appeal more strongly to another group for the same reasons. Is it dumb to rule out one part of the population as a potential audience or smart to focus on a another part in a niche marketing exercise? People who write books about trains will never appeal to those who don't like trains, but they will sell a lot of books to those who do because those folks feel very strongly about their choo-choos.

All this is academic in my case for the following reasons:

1. I don't have any listeners to alienate

2. It's just fun. I don't say anything mean about anyone. I didn't write it to make a political point but because I had my funny bone tickled by the the notion of the nebulous and pretty much fictional "liberal elite" that conservative talking heads blame for everything actually existing as a kind of club. I pictured them standing around munching on canapés and sipping expensive wine before going to the opera. They don't escape this song without being lampooned. I know the liberal elite doesn't exist, but part of me wishes it did, so I  could see how good those canapés actually are. They look delicious.

I agree, OD, this is a site where we exchange ideas and help each other with songwriting. If a song contains politics, the discussion should still be about how well the song works, not whether we agree with the actual ideas of the song. On SW101 I remember some songs that certainly expressed views I didn't agree with, but they expressed them well, and that's what I would focus on.

Glad to hear the liberal elite do exist. I really do want to try one of those canapés.

"Why bother"??? You just nailed it OD! The liberal view is expressed and perpetuated by every known media and form of public address there is and ALWAYS HAS BEEN!!! There has always been pornography, prostitution, homosexuality, politics, atheism and the easily misled ignorant masses.... The one thing that makes America "exceptional," and is taken most for granted, is our constitutionally protected right and freedom to debate these issues! Arguing that religion and politics has no place in valid songwriting is akin to saying McDonalds shouldn't use rap music to sell hamburgers. It's ludicrous!!!

It would be ludicrous for anyone to make that suggestion, which is why nobody has done so, although OD has suggested it may not be wise. Maybe he's right.

I'm not going to get drawn into a discussion here of perceived media bias or politics in general. That's a dead end. For anyone who really feels the need to discuss these subjects, there's a section for that called "Off Topic."

Oh geeez..... Have another beer and sleep it off OD! FREEDOM IS NOT HAVING TO APOLOGIZE FOR WHO YOU ARE! Unfortunately, It's also having to tolerate others as much as they have to tolerate YOU!
