Folks, I go by the name OD (short for Old Dog) that was given to me by a couple of ladies in Nashville during a recording project nearly 15 years ago.  I'm not a performer; in fact I "suck" at it.  I was a bar band bass player off and on, and later played guitar and sang just well enough to write a few songs back when my life was complicated from another divorce; simply because I failed to learn those very valuable words necessary in every long lasting relationship.... "Yes Dear".  Like most amateur songwriters like me, my earlier songs were more for my personal "therapy" than anything  else.  I had gotten some good advice during a couple of trips to Nashville "Don't Write Every Song, A Cry In Your Beer Song" so those early songs were mostly all light-hearted songs, with an attempt to be humorous in some cases; but still the subject matter was always the same "love gone wrong".  A lady singer/songwriter I met doing House Concerts, connected me with some friends of her's in Nashville with a home studio and lot's of connections to excellent musicians and singers.  After 3 years of "off again, on again" recording sessions we had recorded 29 of my original songs and divided them into 2 CD's, one being songs with hired male singers, and another with songs sung by my very talented niece Kristy.  The songs weren't great but the musicians and singers were fabulous.  This is basically the first chapter in my songwriting story.

I may be getting too wordy here so I'm going to be quick on the 2nd chapter of my story.  Retired with 2 new CD's in my possession I met MAB on an old songwriting site called "SongRamp" and made an appointment with him to critique my songs and give me some advice.  After making the poor guy listen to almost every song, I could tell he was bored and told him he didn't have to listen to any more.  It was then he gave me his opinion, he said "The musicians and production is great; but your songs sound like an Old Man wrote them.  Ha!!!   Not exactly what I wanted to hear but soon I would realize he was absolutely correct.  That would begin a long working relationship between MAB and myself; because I was a slow learner and I truly didn't work that hard at it.  Over time I trained my writing muscles to avoid the negative and perfect rhymes and eventually I was writing much better songs (for me anyway).  I will never be considered one of MAB's best students but he does like to use me as an example not to record every song just because we wrote it; but choose the best songs to record and only if they're ready.   I learned a great deal from MAB during the time I worked with him but sadly I've really lost my interest to write anything in the past couple of years.  Oh Well....

I'd like to give a "shout out" to my ole buddy Gavin from 101 whom will most likely remember me as the old guy that tends to get in the beer on occasion.  Ha!!!   Gavin Ole Buddy, I'll do my best to stay positive and try not to be a pain to you.  🙂    Thanks MAB for the invitation to join this site; but I'm not sure Gavin will thank-you.  Ha!!!    A big shout out to my buddy Philboy (Phil Grigg from Florida) that just signed up also.      OD

Welcome OD. It's been a while. I missed you, but I've been practicing my aim and will get you next time. Given your relationship with technology and the modern world, I had been trying to figure out a way to let you sign up for this forum by carrier pigeon. Good to have you here. Behave!

There you go. My best and brightest have shown up. OD dogs himself a little bit but he is a great guy and has many female admirers here in town. (hope their husbands don't find out.) OD has seen it from all angles, from being around Nashville writers and players, attending many events in his home state of Ohio and having written some actually pretty damn good songs. I've seen him come a long way.
He and another guy that just joined Phil Grigg, are good friends of mine and I think this site will be a good outlet for them. They don't care to write in the "Nashville style" but I do believe have learned a lot from that style that they use in their current writing. But mostly they are just good people to be around. Hope you all enjoy their company.

Glad you're here OD.

Gavin Ole Buddy, that is too funny you remember your old "carrier pigeon" joke.  I had totally forgotten that one but I assure you my computer skills have not gotten any better.  I will certainly do my best to behave, you can count on that.  I still don't have a "conscience"..... ugh..... that would be a good woman to slap me upside the head and keep my from getting another beer from the fridge.  Anyway, I'll do my best.  By the way...... I'm happy to see a "Delete" option, I will be using that one from time to time, I'm sure.

OD!!!!!! I've been thinking about you lately wondering where you'd gotten to. Hadn't seen you at 101 for AGES and was wondering what bar table you'd fallen asleep under. With 101 closing, I've been worried about folks missing the switch over to the new forum so yesterday I had resolved to send a message out on 101 today asking if anyone had heard from you...and here you are. Glad you're signed up to the new forum. Thanks for gathering OD to the fold, MAB.

Hey MAB, thanks for the kind words.  Actually I only joined this site to see if you'd have anything "nice" to say about me.  While it's true I no-longer have any interest in writing new songs, I would suggest anyone (regardless of their preferred genre) get in touch with you to up their songwriting chops.  Hell, visiting you in person would be the most advantageous; but they could learn a great deal by asking you some question on this site as well (hint...hint.. to everyone).

(awe come on Jen, I'm only teasing you).  Seriously, I always enjoined following your journey and I'm happy you are still active with your music.  I look forward to getting caught up on what you and John have been writing.

Yup. Still active with it and still loving it. Are you still using that fussy old computer that doesn't like playing music?

Jen, funny you would mention which bar table I had fallen asleep under.  That description would have been pretty accurate just several years ago but life took a turn and I've been forced to do my beer drinking alone at home.  I'm not asking for your sympathy when I tell you this story....... Oh!!!...... it's true alright.  In fact; after working construction for 30 years, I've worked with some very tough individuals and they don't often show their emotions unless it's to kick someone's ass.  My story brought all of them to tears.  My story is this:

I come from a small town that only had 2 bars.  The old one down town closed up and my "ex-wife" bought the other.  OMG!!!  It is a true story and it would bring my construction buddies to tears.  🙂    (me too now that I think about it).

Awe Jen, just when Gavin teases me about carrier pigeons, you bring that topic up.  I didn't want to explain it to him but "Yes" I still use that old computer that uses Window's XP and won't allow me to open most sites during "google" or a "Youtube" search.

However; I did buy a new computer that runs on Window's 10 but I haven't figured out how to transfer files from my old computer onto my new one.  My solution was; I bought a splitter that will allow me to use both at the same time, so I use my old computer for emails only and my new computer for google searches and Facebook (only because the screen is much larger).

However; I did step up with my technology gadgets and bought the top of the line ROKU to give me additional channels on my TV; but I don't know how to hook it up with my two computer situation, so it just sits in the box.  However; don't give up on me yet.  I recently remodeled my old bathroom complete with new indoor/outdoor carpeting and liked it so well, I ran it all the way up to the house.  🙂   (an old joke for you).

Jen, if I may continue on with my story before I bore you.  While my bar story is true, my ex-wife was a pretty savvy business person.  She actually has a BA degree in Business and a CPA license (certified public accountant).  She got the old bar business up and going pretty well and sold it to one of the barmaids that worked for her, for a decent profit.  Sadly, the barmaid had no idea how to run a business and it too has closed down.  There are NO bars left in my community; which isn't really a bad thing.

So I depend on a local business run by my buddy called "Russell's Drive Thru" that is a convenience store you actually drive into and never have to get out of your car to get beer and other goods (very popular around here).  In fact; Russell's Drive Thru has added to my list of poor jokes when I tell folks this story.

I bought a new vehicle in 2014 that has a smart chip that allows me to put the gear shift in "D" for Drive Thru and it takes me right there.  I also embellish the story by adding:   Since Russell's Drive Thru is only 2 blocks from my house and my odometer reads 22,000...... that stands for 22,000 "blocks".  Ha!!!  I get material from the craziest of sources..... note:  I didn't say "good" material, just material.

? Ha! Ya kill me, OD. It's definitely a more interesting world with you in it. Have you ever taken your pen to writing comedic songs like Gavin's "All I Want for Christmas is your Fat Ass to be Gone"

Hey John, good to hear from you again buddy.  I'll have to check this site for ROKU out; in fact I've probably viewed it before but I'll look at it again since my earlier view was probably while I was looking into buying one.  I'm telling you John, the most simple things in life can totally confuse this old guy.  Beyond learning how to use new gadgets; or my former problem of not saying "Yes Dear"; today my only challenge  is to remember Thursday is "Trash Day".  Do you think I can even remember what the hell day it is.  Awe, I'm telling you Brother, life is not easy for a lazy old, beer drinking bastard like this Old Dog.
